✨ What to Wear for Family Photos
(A Sheri Holloway Guide to Looking Effortlessly B-U-tiful!!!)
You've figured out your location, https://www.sherihollowayphotography.com/post/the-best-family-photos-locations-in-branson-missouri
now let's get shopping!
1. Start With a Color Story, Not Matching Shirts
Matching white tops and jeans had their moment. We are now in the era of coordinated, not copy-paste.
Think of your outfits like a curated paint palette. Everyone pulls from the same family of tones, but no one is wearing the exact same thing.
🌿 Neutral & Earthy (Your Branson Sweet Spot)
Colors to suggest:
• Cream
• Warm beige
• Camel
• Olive
• Rust
• Soft denim
• Muted sage
• Dusty blue
This palette photographs beautifully at places like Big Cedar Lodge, Dogwood Canyon, Busiek, or Stockstill Park. It feels timeless, warm, and organic. No one looks trendy in five years. 🍂

⸻
💙 Soft Coastal (Light & Airy)
Colors to suggest:
• Light blue
• Ivory
• Soft gray
• Blush
• Muted lavender
This is perfect for spring sessions or brighter open fields. It feels fresh, calm, and easy.
⸻

🌾 Rich & Moody (Fall Drama Without Being Heavy)
Colors to suggest:
• Deep green
• Mustard
• Burnt orange
• Burgundy
• Charcoal brown
This palette sings in autumn leaves and wooded areas. It gives dimension and depth without looking dark.

2. Texture Is the Secret Sauce
Texture photographs better than bold patterns.
Flat cotton tees? No!
Movement and texture? Chef’s kiss. YES!!!
LAYER BABY!
• Knit sweaters
• Flowing dresses
• Linen
• Corduroy
• Layers
• Denim jackets
• Hats for dads (yes please)

3. Patterns: Use Wisely
One person can wear a subtle pattern.
Two if they’re small scale.
Nobody needs giant stripes yelling for attention.
Florals are beautiful when:
• They include colors from the main palette
• They aren’t neon
• They feel soft, not loud
⸻

4. Dress Mom First
You and I both know this is the golden rule.
When Mom feels confident:
• She stands differently
• She smiles differently
• The entire family follows her energy
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they add movement and shape. Structured skirts with boots? Also stunning.

OTHER HELPFUL TIPS
ONE - Remember to coordinate, not clash.
Don't plan to go too “matchy-matchy," Instead, choose a color palette and try to stick to it. You can venture into some patterns, but for every one person in a pattern, there should be someone else color-blocking in solids to help keep things from getting too busy.
TWO - Bring a backup outfit.
It never hurts to throw an extra outfit in your car or bag just in case there is a wardrobe malfunction. Better to be prepared than stressed!
THREE - Don't forget the candy.
All is fair with bribery and small kids! Come prepared with the snacks to entice them and keep them engaged a little longer! Not M&M’s though! Haha!
FOUR - Have your kids' favorite songs prepared.
For young kids, I've found it helpful to have a few of their favorite songs ready to go. This easy trick helps to keeps the vibe fun and the smiles coming.
FIVE - Don't try to be proper and perfect.
Don’t be afraid to keep moving, smiling, and interacting with each other. We all want the “one photo of everyone looking and smiling at the camera, but if it’s forced you can tell! So come into it with low pressure, have fun, and let the magic happen naturally.
SIX - Get there a few minutes early.
Remember to show up early! Being late to a session is always stressful because you know time is ticking against you.
SEVEN - Know the facts up front.
You will receive a copyright release of the digital files. The large resolution files will be delivered within 3 weeks.
EIGHT - Print your photos.
Even if it’s just a few updated portraits for your home, you invested in these photos and they deserve to be showcased year-round in your home, not just on social media.
