Let me answer some questions that I recieve as a Branson Family Photographer:

What' the Best Time for a Family Photo Session?

Timing plays a crucial role in how your photos turn out. Branson’s natural light changes throughout the day, and the seasons bring different moods to your pictures!

  • Golden Hour Magic

Right before Golden Hour is my favorite time of the day for photos! I have clients go to timeanddate.com to see when the sun sets on their session day, that way we can determine the best time to take photos! Normally I suggest 1 and a half to 2 hours before the sunsets to have the session. The end of your photo session will give you that Golden light hat flatters skin tones and creates beautiful shadows. Scheduling your session during these times can make your photos GLOW especially in the summer and fall in Missouri~

  • Seasons

Winter: Although Missouri winters can be cold (and sometimes icy), they can also be striking with crisp air and bare trees that gives you beautiful soft lighting!

Spring: The flowers are starting to blossom, the birds are singing, the buds on the trees here are colorful with pops of yellow, purples, and whites, OH!! and the light is beautiful! Spring is a great time for photos in Missouri!

Fall: Missouri Autumns are my favorite season to capture portraits in! We have an abundance of trees here that make it the perfect time for beautiful color pops and colorful clothing to really have your family photos fun and colorful!

Summer: Summer in Missouri provides lush greenery but can be hot and bright, so early morning or after dinner sessions work best.

  • Avoid Midday Harsh Light

The sun at midday can cause harsh shadows and squinting. If you must shoot during this time, look for shaded areas or indoor locations. I do have a Photo Studio at my home in Branson for when the weather is not cooperating!

What Locations do you recommend?

Branson has a variety of scenic spots that suit different family styles and preferences. Choosing the right location sets the tone for your photos.

  • Table Rock Lake

This lake offers stunning water views, docks, and wooded areas. It’s perfect for families who love nature and want a relaxed, outdoor vibe.

  • Downtown Branson

The historic downtown area features colorful buildings, quaint shops, and lively streets. It’s great for families who want a mix of urban charm and casual fun.

  • State Parks and Trails

Places like the Stockstill Park, and Dewey Short Park by the Table Rock Lake dam provide peaceful forest settings and walking trails and a bridge for natural photos!

How long will the session take?

I have several Family Session Collections to choose from! The sessions take around an hour, that way we can do multiple groupings! If you have more than 12 people, I suggest 1 hour and 30 minutes. Don't worry, I will help keep the kids entertained!

I also have Mini Sessions during the year!

What should we wear for family photos in Branson?

What your family wears can make a big difference in how your photos look. Coordinating outfits helps create harmony without everyone matching exactly.

I have created a blog on what to wear for family portraits! You can find that here: https://www.sherihollowayphotography.com/post/what-to-wear-for-family-photos-in-branson-missouri

  • Choose a Color Palette

Pick 2-3 complementary colors that suit the location and season. For example, earth tones work well for outdoor shoots in fall, while pastels fit spring settings.

  • Avoid Busy Patterns

Solid colors or subtle patterns keep the focus on faces and expressions. Too many patterns can distract and clash.

  • Comfort Matters

Make sure everyone wears comfortable clothes and shoes, especially if you plan to walk or explore during the shoot.

  • Add Layers and Accessories

Scarves, hats, or light jackets add texture and interest. They also allow for quick changes in look without a full outfit swap.

Plan Activities to Capture Natural Moments

Posed photos are classic, but candid shots often tell the best stories. Planning simple activities during your session helps everyone relax and interact naturally.

  • Walk and Talk

Strolling along a trail or lakeside path encourages movement and genuine smiles.

  • Play Games

Tossing a ball, blowing bubbles, or having a tickle fight can bring out laughter and connection.

  • Bring Props

Items like a picnic blanket, a favorite book, or a musical instrument add personality and context.

  • Include Pets

If your family includes a dog, bringing them along can make photos more lively and heartfelt.

Prepare Your Family for the Session

Getting everyone ready helps the session go smoothly and keeps the mood positive!

  • Rest Well

Make sure kids get enough sleep the night before to avoid crankiness.

  • Bring Snacks and Water

Keep energy up, especially for longer sessions. You might consider bringing CANDY as a sweet reward! I normally have stickers, or sweettarts in my bag for the kids!

  • Pack Essentials

I try to keep an emergency bag with me with wet wipes, tissues, and bug spray in it!

You might want to bring a change of clothes for your little ones! They always tend to get dirty right before the session!

Final Tips for a Successful Branson Family Photo Session

  • Be Flexible

Weather or unexpected events may require adjustments. Stay open and positive.

  • Focus on Connection

The best photos show genuine relationships, not just perfect poses. Having confidence is key!

  • Have Fun

Enjoy the moment and let your family’s personality shine through! I always do the traditional portraits, but we also just have fun and celebrate to get those candid moments that more often than not are my favorite images to capture!

Posing prompts that I use are look at each other and smile and cheezy smile and this always gets people laughing! We do a lot of walking towards the camera and even running!

Planning your family photos during your Branson vacation takes a little effort but rewards you with beautiful images and lasting memories. By choosing the right time, location, outfits, and photographer (me or my team:) , you set the stage for photos that capture your family’s unique story. Take these tips and start planning your session today to bring home more than just souvenirs—bring home moments frozen in time!
